ReWire Your Brain For Love:
Creating Vibrant Relationships Using the Science of Mindfulness
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I just had to write this book.
For most people, finding their way to an emotionally satisfying relationship is a struggle, because of their history. Our childhood experiences set in place some of the biggest boulders on the path to healthy connections.
Now, though, the brain is understood well enough to know which areas need to be built up in order to leverage those boulders out of the way, and to create emotional well-being. And we know enough about nerve cells (neurons) to have discovered that the adult brain can, indeed, grow new connections as well as brand new neurons. Broadly speaking, it’s never too late to have a brain that looks and works like it had a happy childhood.
In the last five years, there have been a growing number of scientific findings which show that mindfulness meditation stimulates and develops those new connections, laying the foundation for new patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
The results in the real world – as reported by researchers and clinicians, and observed in the people I see in my practice who have used mindfulness meditation – prove this. I’ve been overjoyed as these previously “stuck” people have experienced improvements in their current relationships, found that they made better choices and had improved outcomes when starting new relationships, and suffered far less emotional distress whether in or out of a relationship. (And this is on top of what they tell me is increased productivity at work, fewer stressed-out symptoms such as overeating, and a boost in overall mood which lasts longer than anything else they’ve tried.)
In the tens of thousands of hours I have spent with my patients, working with severely brain-damaged teenagers to the highest-functioning, high-powered overachievers you can imagine, I’ve become very clear that the bottom line of any healing endeavor is being in meaningful, authentic, compassionate connection with another human being.
Creating those relationships is hard.
Mindfulness meditation can make it easier.
As I said, I just had to write this book. I look forward to sharing it with you when it comes out.
